What is the deal with Webkinz?

My son has been asking and asking for a Webkinz. After looking at the toy I have to hope there is more excitement and fun to this product that simply what is described. I went to investigate ordering one for Christmas and this is the entire product description:

Webkinz animals come with a special internet code where your child can interact with it. They can name it, make it a home, even play games. Not recommended for children under 3.

Makes me think this is one of those toys that after a couple days will sit on the shelf right next to Furby and Robosapien.
