When I get to work yesterday there is a not in my mailbox indicating that I have to complete a state mandated training by the end of the day. It seems that the powers that be neglected to inform anyone in my department about the original training until registering for it was over and done with. The note indicates they have made “other arrangements” for those of who could not travel to the actual training and that we should meet in conference room at 1 pm. Fully anticipating that we will be hooked up via one of those video conferencing systems I head for the meeting room expecting a decent training session.
What do I find when I get to the conference room? Sitting in the middle of the table is a cassette player and a stack of cassettes. Attached is a note telling us to all remember to sign the attendance form and to remember to return the cassette player to the supply closet. Now imagine spending the next 3.5 hours listening to someone drone on and on. How on earth can someone be expected to learn anything in this type of environment with no visual reinforcement of the information or interaction of any kind? I think they just wanted to save money on travel expenses and fulfill the state requirements but could care less if we actually took anything away from the training.
