Someone emailed me with a question about registering a website idea. The general gist of the question was whether you can register for a copyright or something for a website for a particular market such as “Las Vegas Homes for Sale“? Granted I am not a lawyer nor expert in the area but my understanding is that you could patent the process you used to build the website, but not the website itself or its idea. You can copyright the contents of the website, though. Additionally, you could trademark the “look and feel” of the site but not patent either of those. If we could protect ideas, then there would only be one of everything such as 1 search engine, 1 hosting website and so on.
