Brain drain.

This week I read a great book about the American food system. It was an enlightening read about just how and where our food comes from. I do believe that if more people knew how that egg or steak got to their plate they wouldn’t see it as such a great tasting meal. One thing that struck me in the book was a discussion on the “brain drain” that is taking place in rural America. Essentially there is little keeping the best and brightest in rural America. Jobs and earning a living are far more possible in bigger cities. The person being interviewed in the book detailed how our food chain is only as safe as the people who are growing our food. This really is something to think about when you consider giving a not to bright person the challenge of growing alot of food as quickly as possible. Consider for a moment how easy it would be to convince someone with lesser knowledge or world experience to use a particular method of growing animals or crops. Is this what we really want for our food system? I encourage everyone to check out the book “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” for more information on this subject.
