Gardening time
Posted by The Inspector on May 4th, 2010 filed in UncategorizedThis weekend we put the final touches on our new garden bed. We decided to go with a raised garden bed instead of tilling the soil and trying to work with it as it is. The raised bed is considerable more expensive but the ease of using it already seems worth it. We build a 16 x 8 foot bed and fenced it in with chicken wire. We have tons of rabbits around and hopefully they will be detoured by the chicken wire. This is a family project so what we are planting is a mixture of what we collectively are interested in growing. So far we have put lettuce, carrots, and beans in the ground. Waiting in the wings are cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers. The children want nothing to do with vegetables and are intent on growing flowers and pumpkins. In addition to the garden bed we also have several containers with plants in them and a plot at the community garden we will be using later this month. We are hoping to be able to grow enough fresh vegetable to have our summer meal needs met. This might be a lofty goal but maybe luck will be on our side this summer. Either way we should learn what works and what doesn’t in order to make a better garden next year.
