Cheap eats!

In our attempts to become more sustainable we have been looking for cheap and healthy food in a variety of ways. One thing we have done is taken advantage of offers of free garden produce whenever offered. We have also found out that fresh produce is much cheaper when you buy it in bulk or by the bushel as opposed to smaller amounts. This is work to process either by canning or freezing but the savings is substantial. For example this summer corn was $4.99 a dozen in our area but if you bought a bushel at the farmer’s market it was just $10.00! We put up 32 pints of corn for just $10.00. We canned 50 pounds of potatoes that are amazing at a total cost of $10.00. Today we picked up a bushel of pie pumpkins that were $12.99. Before finding this deal we paid $3.00 for one pumpkin at the farmer’s market. It goes to show that with budgeting and planning and work you can eat really well for not a great deal of money.
